Utah Man pleads guilty in wife’s death

Saturday, April 16, 2005

Salt Lake City (Utah) resident and hospital orderly Mark Hacking pleaded guilty Friday to killing his wife Lori, and placing her body in a dumpster.

Mrs. Hacking’s disappearance last summer touched off an intense, weeklong search in Salt Lake County which a wire service report said was similar to the other sensational Salt Lake crime, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart from her own bedroom.

After Hacking admitted details of his crime to his family, earlier, he suffered a breakdown and was placed in a psychiatric hospital. He was seen in court Friday with his hands cuffed behind his back.

He admitted to the judge that he killed his wife while she slept. His motives, according to prosecutors, were his anger and despondency when she discovered that he was not accepted into a North Carolina medical school as he had claimed, but would remain a hospital orderly.

Mrs. Hacking is reported to have broken down sobbing at her workplace, a Wells Fargo brokerage, after discovering her husband’s deception. She had placed a call to the medical school’s administrators and been told he was not enrolled. He had lied to her about graduating from the University of Utah as well.

Mrs. Hacking’s mother and father were in the courtroom to hear their son-in-law declare: “I intentionally shot Lori Hacking in the head with a .22 rifle.” They said it was like a “knife in the heart” to hear that, but were happy he owned up to the crime.

The attack occurred last July. Volunteers scouring a landfill found her decomposed remains after three months of searching.

Fuel leak prompts 17,000-vehicle recall by Toyota

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Toyota announced on Friday that it will recall around 17,000 Lexus vehicles in response to risks of the fuel tank in the cars leaking after a collision.

The Lexus HS 250h model was subjected to the recall following a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation. Despite previously passing Toyota safety inspections, the conclusions of an NHTSA sub-contracted investigator were that; when the vehicles in question collided with an object at more than fifty-miles-per hour, more than 142 grams of fuel, the maximum allowed by US law, leaked from the crashed car.

According to Toyota, further tests did not show any additional failure of the fuel tank.

In response to the findings, Toyota issued a recall of all affected vehicles, since the company had no solution immediately available. The recall includes 13,000 cars already sold, as well as another 4,000 still at dealerships.

Toyota says it plans to conduct further tests to determine the cause of the leak. A Toyota spokesman, Brian Lyons, said that the company was “still working to determine what the root cause of the condition is.” It’s still unclear when exactly the recall will take place, or when dealerships will be allowed to sell this model again. Lyons said that Toyota is “working feverishly to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Toyota isn’t aware of any accidents stemming from the leaking fuel tank in the affected vehicles, first introduced in the summer of 2009.

Salmonella outbreak sickens over one thousand in United States

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Over 1000 cases of illness have now been identified in a foodborne salmonellosis outbreak that began in mid-April 2008 in the United States.

As of July 8, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 1013 confirmed infections throughout the United States, along with four cases in Canada. 203 hospitalizations have been linked to the outbreak. It has caused at least one death, and it may have been a contributing factor in another. The pathogen responsible is the rare Saintpaul strain of Salmonella enterica.

Nearly half of the reported illnesses were in Texas and New Mexico. According to unnamed sources close to the investigation, most illness clusters in the outbreak involve Mexican restaurants. Illness clusters in the hard hit state of Illinois were publicly identified by local health departments as involving three Mexican restaurants.

The CDC is in the process of investigating the outbreak and trying to identify the contamination’s point of origin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently suspects that the contaminated food product is an ingredient in fresh salsa, such as fresh jalapeño pepper, fresh serrano pepper, fresh cilantro, or certain types of raw tomato.

Some produce industry insiders doubt that fresh produce is to blame for the outbreak. They point to the absence of Salmonella on all of the tested produce samples to date, as well as divergent results from produce tracebacks. They also say that the extended time frame of new sicknesses makes it unlikely that either raw tomatoes or fresh jalapeños, the government’s two main suspects, could be responsible. Will Steele, President and CEO of Frontera Produce, said that “the outbreak is probably related to processed goods and they’re looking in the wrong closets.”

Steele’s Texas based company has been forced to hold shipments of fresh jalapeño peppers after loads of produce were repeatedly flagged by the FDA for testing. Although independent testing of both loads showed no sign of Salmonella, the peppers are still on hold until the FDA finishes its own testing of the second load flagged on July 1st. “There are still no results,” Steele says. “The salability of that produce in two to three days is gone. We ceased harvesting. There is no sense in bringing in more product and having it rot.”

Steele, like others in the produce industry, believes that the FDA should be focusing on processed produce instead of fresh produce. “Methodology is backward,” he says. “FDA is reaching for answers. You can’t tie jalapeño pepper shipped on June 30 back to April 10.”

Still, the FDA and the CDC consider testing of fresh jalapeños and other fresh produce a high priority. The CDC writes that “the accumulated data from all investigations indicate that jalapeño peppers caused some illnesses.”

The FDA is cautioning that people who would be in the most danger if infected with Salmonella (infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems) should avoid eating the suspected types of produce listed on their website.

NZ man stabbed in the face with a 15-centimetre knife

Friday, July 7, 2006

A 36-year-old man, who is yet to be named, is undergoing surgery after an attacker lodged a knife through one cheek and out the other. The handle broke off, leaving the 15-cm (about 6 inches) blade inside him. The man was rushed to hospital today, July 7, at about 2 a.m. NZST. The attack occurred last night after a domestic row in Albany on Auckland‘s North Shore.

New Zealand Police report that the knife just missed his optic nerve and his condition is stable and not life threatening.

John Chaplin, head and neck surgeon said, “the man could be treated relatively simply. The major blood vessels of the head were further back in the neck and the knife could be relatively easily removed in an operating theatre where bleeding could be controlled.”

The police have issued an arrest warrant for Vance Paraki Tuheke, 31-year-old, in relation to the attack.

The victim may suffer from some facial numbness.

Non Corrosive Pipe Plugs}

Non-Corrosive Pipe Plugs

by

Teres DifeoIn order to protect exposed pipe and tube ends from dust, dirt, corrosion, rust and damage during storage, transportation and handling, they can be covered with pipe plugs or end plugs. These plugs also protect the inner threads of the pipe so that there are no scratches, cracks or damage to the threads which will render the pipe ineffective. Pipe plugs also help to give a good finish to an exposed or open pipe end so that dust and dirt don’t enter the interiors of the pipe or tube. They also prevent injury to people who may accidentally brush past them.

There are several materials which are used to manufacture pipe plugs. All metals which are non-corrosive, rust-resistant and moisture proof are suitable, such as stainless steel, aluminum and certain alloys. In other cases, they may be coated with compounds or other metals. Rubber and rubber compounds, silicone, nylon, plastics and plastic compounds are other materials that are commonly used.

In terms of design, there are hundreds of variations available and these fulfill certain specific requirements. Colors, textures and finishes are other options available.

Barrel: This design has convex sides to ensure a perfect fit and it is used in most applications as a general purpose pipe plug. The design makes it easy to fit and remove without the use of any special tools. When made in nylon or plastics, they can be used in many applications where aggressive liquids, acids, gases or solvents may be sealed off.

Bevel edge: These pipe plugs are designed to keep the plug firmly in place during shipping and handling. They may be purchased in combination with sealing gaskets or bevel protector devices.

Ribbed: pipe plugs are tapered with ribbed edges which allows them to be used on pipes of different thicknesses. They have been specially found useful in applications where copper tubes have to be plugged.

Push-fit, Pull-off: These plugs are very easy to fit and remove and if they are provided with additional features like metal inserts and pull-tabs, they can become tamper-proof and tamper-evident.

Sealing pipe plugs: Are fitted with a thin gasket to ensure better grip and sealing.

Blanking plugs: are used to merely close off an open pipe end. They can be designed aesthetically to give a decorative finish.

Threaded: This design is ideal for heavy duty application, strenuous shipment and handling conditions and also for long storage times. They protect against all contaminants, moisture and other atmospheric pollutants. They may have a knob or knurled head for easy fitting and removal.Ribbed: pipe plugs are tapered with ribbed edges which allows them to be used on pipes of different thicknesses. Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Times Square bomb suspects arrested in Pakistan

Saturday, May 22, 2010

At least six suspects, wanted in connection with a failed car bomb attempt in Times Square, New York City on May 1, have been arrested by authorities in Pakistan. The arrests follow a visit to Pakistan by two high-ranking American security officials—US National Security Adviser Gen James Jones and Leon Panetta, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), both of whom praised Pakistan for its efforts in tracking down suspects in the bomb attack.

Amongst those arrested are the co-owner of a large company which provides catering to several embassies in Pakistan and a major in the Pakistani Army, though the Army released a statement denying any involvment. Some are believed to have been educated in the United States. A notice on the website of the US embassy in Islamabad reported that the catering company co-owned by one of the suspects had links to terrorism and has since advised US citizens against using the firm.

Those arrested are believed to have had links with Faisal Shahzad, the primary suspect in the bombing, who was arrested on May 3 on board an aircraft at New York’s JFK Airport.

One source told Reuters: “We are investigating whether Ashraf has provided any financial support to Faisal because Ashraf and his father are rich people and they run a very big catering business” though another stated that “[t]hey may be innocent because being friends does not mean you are involved in the activities of your friends”.

The suspects are currently being detained by the Pakistani security services, who are known to have close links with the CIA, to the extent of allowing CIA officials access to prisoners.

SpaceX launches fifth resupply rocket to International Space Station

Sunday, January 11, 2015

Space transport services company SpaceX launched their fifth Dragon resupply vehicle to the International Space Station yesterday. The spacecraft — containing more than 2,200kg (5,000 pounds) of food, experiments, and spare parts — successfully decoupled from the launch rocket and should reach the station early tomorrow.

The launch was postponed from Tuesday because of a technical issue on the second stage of the rocket. The shipment includes replacements for cargo aboard the spaceship Cygnus, destroyed during a failed launch in October. Cygnus belonged to the rival Orbital Sciences Corporation.

SpaceX tried unsuccessfully to land the Falcon 9 delivery rocket for reuse. The rocket reached an unmanned barge in the Atlantic, but landed too hard. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the landing “bodes well for the future, though”. The attempted salvage of the rocket was experimental, using new retractable fins. Next time they will add extra hydraulic fluid, Musk said.

The ship’s support equipment was damaged but, according to Musk, the barge is intact. Last year saw two successful SpaceX splashdowns but landing on such a small target as a ship is unique.

Recycling Tips}

Submitted by: Tions Werever

You can take care of the environment and do all the recycling you can no matter if youre at home, at work, at school or outside. Theres literally thousands of things, most of them very simple and trivial, you could do that can really help make a difference. In the following text, youll find a pretty extensive list of things you could do, and thats not even half of everything that can be done. Try doing just a couple of these things and youll be a great part of making our world more eco-friendly and sustainable. If you are a company and you need a professional approach to recycling you can consider www.sorema.it.

1.Dont throw away old magazines. You can use them to cut out interesting pictures or articles to put in your journal or scrapbook. You can also use the paper from magazines for some fun and quirky origami projects. You can even donate them to doctors or dentists waiting rooms where theyll do more than good than just being in the trash.

2.Avoid aerosol cans. Theyre highly pressurized and dangerous, not to mention harmful to the ozone layer. Use products that come in refillable or reusable glass or metal bottles.

3.Carry your own bags when you go shopping. The plastic bags you get at stores rarely get recycled, so always carry your own cloth or paper bags.

4.Buy products that always get recycled in your community. Plan ahead and think through every shopping trip. Whats the use of buying sustainable, recyclable products when theres no designated recycling facility anywhere near you.

5.Donate old toys, clothes and other usable household items you no longer want. There are good uses for those in homeless shelters or orphanages, and theres no need to throw them away.

6.Make cleaning rags from your old clothes. Theyre washable and better for the environment than regular polyester rags.

7.Stop using disposable diapers. They comprise the majority of trash at landfills and cant be recycled. Use cloth diapers you only need a few of them and they can be washed as many times as necessary.

8.Dont throw food scraps and other organic waste into the trash. Use them for composting your garden.

9.Get to know your trash! Knowing what yard waste is and whats not makes all the difference in recycling. Yard waste doesnt include the following items: leftover food, fruits and vegetables, rocks or concrete, large branches, logs, large pieces of wood, pet waste, yucca plant leaves, palm fronds or other fibrous materials.

10.Recycle your spam mail! Advertising materials you always get in the mail can be recycled with other paper and cardboard products.

11.Spongy plastic items take forever to recycle and decompose. Avoid using plastic or Styrofoam cups and opt for glass or crystal ones. If you receive any similar plastic items, recycle them immediately.

12.Fertilize your garden. Store-bought fertilizers and filled with chemicals and very expensive. You can make your own from organic waste from your kitchen, and reduce all waste you produce by as much as 25%.

13.Always make a shopping list. Only buy the things you need, thatll be consumed before they expire. Perishable foods make more than 50% of all organic waste and take up unnecessary space at landfills.

14.Buy everything in bulk. It eliminates all that unnecessary plastic packaging and saves you a lot of money.

15.Buy household cleaners and detergents that come in a concentrated form. It saves money and reduces the amount of packaging.

16.Use natural sponges and cotton or linen rags instead of paper towels.

17.Pack your lunches in reusable plastic or metal containers. Carry them in cloth or paper bags to eliminate the need for any extra plastic.

18.Use washable cloth strainers for your coffee machine instead of the traditional paper filters.

19.Reuse aluminum pie plates as containers for baking or freezing foods such as fruits and vegetables.

20.Dont throw away ceramic tiles. If they break or you just have them lying around, use them as trivets for hot pots and pans. They dont conduct heat and are more beautiful that regular plastic or cork ones.

21.Buy cosmetics and other personal hygiene products with minimal packaging that can be refilled and reused.

22.Cut old, torn towels and bedding into pieces and use them for cleaning. You can even donate them to animal shelters to be used as padding for dog and cat kennels.

23.Use old toothbrushes as cleaning tools. Theyre great for cleaning otherwise unreachable nooks and crannies.

24.Use old shower curtains to cover the floor and furniture when painting or redecorating the house.

25.Avoid using disposable razors. Instead, opt for those that have refillable cartridge or electric ones.

26.Buy liquid soap, shampoo and other similar items in refillable packaging.

27.Also buy all cleaning products in refillable bottles. It saves time, money, space and the environment.

28.Buy unbleached, organic toilet paper in bulk.

29.Buy organic deodorant. Its almost always refillable and better for your skin than regular ones.

30.Buy pump bottles instead of aerosol cans. The former can be easily recycled, while the latter cant.

31.When writing something, use both sides of the paper.

32.Help create a demand for recycled paper by only using recycled paper for writing and printing.

33.Donate to your local recycling facility or support them in any other way.

34.Recycle old phone books and cardboard boxes.

35.Buy milk in plastic containers or bottles instead of waxed boxes. Waxed boxes are non-recyclable and non-degradable.
