Selecting A Credit Card With Freedom Debt Relief

By Sean A. Kelly

Credit cards have a way of being our friend and our enemy at the same time. At times they may be useful and actually helpful but sometimes they may land us into the deepest financial hole. I have a friend who had to rebuild his life after incurring overwhelming debts due to his credit card swiping habits. His name is Eric. He enrolled into a debt management program under Freedom Debt Relief (FDR) so that he could persistently and consistently pay off his credit card debts over a few years. Once he completed his program, he wanted to apply for just one credit card to keep in case of emergencies. He did not want to choose a card that would only cause history to repeat itself. Based on the information he gathered during his credit counseling stint at FDR, he surmised that he could follow a few simple rules when choosing the right credit card.

The first thing Eric had to figure out was the type of credit card that he would need. To determine that, he would have to decide what he was going to use the card for. There are many types of credit cards that include standard, premium, charge, limited purpose cards, secured and prepaid credit cards. Each card has a different credit limit, payment options and even different interest rates and annual fees. Eric wanted to keep a card for emergencies such as for car repair or medical treatments. So in this aspect he figured perhaps a charge card would serve his purpose well as it does not have a credit limit because the balance is to be paid in full at the end of the month. However, he would need to have excellent credit rating to be eligible for a charge card and with his recent debt settlement history on his credit report they would probably not approve his request for a card with no credit limit.

Another aspect Eric looked into was the annual percentage rate (APR). Ideally, the credit card to choose would have to be the card with the lowest percentage rate because this will determine how much interest will be charged on the balance of his card every month. Eric preferred credit cards with a percentage rate of below 12%. Other than the APR, Eric was also advised to consider the number of fees associated with using the card. Many companies charge annual fees but there may also be hidden charges that credit card holders are rarely aware of such as closure, over-the-limit and late charges. The amount of these charges may also differ from one company to another. Basically, a low interest rate alone probably would not help him save any money if the fees are high.

Credit cards may also offer many perks and rewards. To Eric, this feature could be a double-edged sword as it could give him more benefits but also cause him to spend mindlessly due to the discounts or prizes that he would get by using the card. Basically the rewards act as incentives to lure customers and reward loyal ones. Some are even inclusive of a rewards program that offer airline mileage and cash back on your purchases. To many people, this may be the last thing they would look at when considering to apply for a credit card. But for a reformed impulsive credit card swipe machine like Eric, he would have to choose a card with the least rewards. Basically the idea is that if they reward him less, the less frequent he would feel tempted to use it. After all, credit card rewards may only be worthwhile for frequent credit card users who are often the biggest spenders.

In the end, Eric applied for a standard credit card with low interest rate and reasonable fees. He would use it only in emergencies and he would make a point of paying the balance in full at the end of the month. He does not use it to make daily purchases as he does not want to slip back into the same old habit that dragged him down before.

Leonard Skinner, namesake of rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies at age 77

Monday, September 20, 2010

Leonard Skinner, the namesake of rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at the age of 77. Skinner was a gym teacher and basketball coach and taught members of the group. His death was announced by his son, also named Leonard Skinner, who also said that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Skinner died at the St. Catherine Laboure Manor nursing home in Riverside at 02.30 a.m. His son said that he had a bowl of ice cream shortly after midnight. He had been at the home for about a year.

The coach taught the members of the group in the 1960s and was reportedly hard on the students. He later said in a 2009 interview that “he was just following the rules”. He disputed the rumours that he was extra tough on them or that he kicked them out of school.

In later years he opened up his own bar and became friends with some members of the group and even introduced them at one of their concerts in Jacksonville.

US bank Goldman Sachs accused of fraud

Saturday, April 17, 2010

US bank Goldman Sachs has been accused of fraud by the American regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Goldman Sachs arranged a transaction at Paulson’s request in which Paulson heavily influenced the selection of the portfolio to suit its economic interests

According to the SEC, Goldman Sachs failed to inform investors of a conflict of interest in the banks’ marketing of sub-prime mortgage investments, which were being sold at a time of uncertainty in the US housing market. The SEC says that a Goldman subsidiary, Paulson & Co, had been involved in the selection of securities included in the mortgage investments. It had not been disclosed to investors that Paulson had bet that the value of the investments would fall, benefiting Paulson but not those who bought the investments.

The securities, which were combined into a package called Abacus that was sold to investors, lost over $1 billion during the collapse of the US housing industry. According to the SEC, Goldman, Paulson, and the creator of Abacus, a vice-president of Goldman Sachs named Fabrice Tourre, all knew that the housing market was going to collapse, but continued to sell Abacus despite the risks.

Tourre had been in command of selecting the investments within Abacus, and then was the person responsible for selling it to investors. He had told those who invested in Abacus that its components had been selected by an independent party, ACA Management.

In all, 99% of the investments within Abacus were downgraded, and investors lost upwards of a billion US dollars.

The SEC alleged that “Goldman Sachs arranged a transaction at Paulson’s request in which Paulson heavily influenced the selection of the portfolio to suit its economic interests.” In a short response from Goldman, the bank said that “The SEC’s charges are completely unfounded in law and fact and we will vigorously contest them and defend the firm and its reputation.”

Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

Fujitsu launches cloud website for dog pedometer service

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

Japanese multinational company Fujitsu launched a website for a dog pedometer which allows customers to monitor their dog’s health online. The device measures data while attached to the dog’s collar. Customers are also able to add more data to the website manually, then it displays the complete set of data graphically. Fujitsu launched the website today (Tuesday) and plans to start the sales in Japan tomorrow (Wednesday).

The pedometer is called “Wandant”, from Japanese “Wan” equivalent to “woof”, and the “dant” of “pendant”. The latter refers to the pedometer, because it is attached to a dog collar. The users can transfer data to an Android phone using a touch-card to make it available online.

Fujitsu said Wandant would be the first cloud-based dog health-care service.

The data include walking, temperature, and shaking motion statistics. The users can manually enter additional data such as food quantities, weight, custom notes, and photos.

Fujitsu said, “The data are presented graphically on a custom website that makes trends in the dog’s activities easy to understand at a glance. This helps owners get a stronger sense of their dog’s health, while enabling communication with the dog.”

Whitewater Heating Suggestions To Keep You Warm

Whitewater Heating – Suggestions To Keep You Warm

by

Claire Winters

If you do not have the right kind of heating system in your home, it would be rather tough to keep warm during those chilly winter months. Whitewater heating ideas give you many ideas and alternatives to accomplish this task. There are several forms of heating systems and once you have determined the area you want to heat and the budget you have, you can start exploring the different systems that are out there.

Probably the most standard option is using wood in a fireplace or wood burning stove to heat your building. If you are dedicated, physically capable, and live in area with trees that can be cut down for firewood, this could be an option as it would be highly affordable. However, if you are not up to the task of cutting wood, you can buy the wood, or there are several other options available for heating your home.

One of the most popular systems is the forced air system. To disperse the air through your home, ductwork is used with this kind of system. Furnaces can easily run off of electricity, oil, propane, or natural gas. Some people tend to like this option because the air could be filtered, humidified or dehumidified. One of the more affordable ways to heat the house, it could also combine with air conditioning to cool your home in the warmer months. However, furnaces can be noisy, ductwork takes up space in your walls and ceilings, and sometimes the air can give off irritants.

Another Whitewater heating concept is the use of a radiant heating system. How the system works is there are tubes embedded in the flooring throughout the home and heated water from the boiler is transported through that tubing. Radiant panels could also be used in ceilings. Very cost effective, this sort of heating is practical financially. Heating may be a slow process since the water must be heated before entering the tubes so that you can properly warm the room. While it does provide an enormous amount of comfort to a room, this method is usually an expensive system to install and implement within a home.

A hydronic system furthermore uses water just like radiant heating products. This choice is also heated by a boiler but the water is then routed to baseboard units mounted around the walls. An effective system, this method has positive aspects. Electrical energy, oil, natural gas and also propane can fuel the boiler. This system is extremely quiet which is definitely one rewarding advantage. It is essential to be careful when placing furniture, curtains or other home decor, however since the baseboards do get extremely hot and could present a risk.

More heating alternatives are also available depending on your needs. It might be helpful to seek the assistance from a HVAC designer as you continue doing research since they have the expertise and can tell you precisely what is best for the area you intend to heat. It would be beneficial to ask other questions when you have decided on which type of heating system that will best suit your needs. Ask about the warranty of the device, the installation, and the cost and preparation affiliated with that. Doing an online search may help you find customer reviews and evaluations as to what is the most popular options currently. Those who have purchased the systems before might have some good insight for you and might answer some questions or concerns you may have with a system that you may potentially purchase. Not only a prolonged investment in your home, choosing the best heating system for your residence will allow you many years of comfort in your own environment which is certainly an important consideration for your purchase.
