Mascots for Vancouver 2010 Olympics based on native mythology

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

The mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia were just announced. Based on mythological characters, they are Miga, Quatchi and Sumi.

Miga, a sea bear who lives in the ocean with her family pod near Tofino, and Quatchi, a young sasquatch, represent the Olympics, while Sumi represents the Paralympics that follow afterward.

A sea bear is a First Nations creature, part killer whale, part Kermode spirit bear. While illustrated as being taller than the other characters, the mascot costume of Quatchi is the same height as the other two characters.

The third mascot, Sumi, an animal-guardian spirit, is a Thunderbird that wears the hat of an orca. Sumi will be the mascot of the Paralympics.

In 2004, the Times Colonist suggested a marmot might be a good mascot, except for their winter hibernation. The organizers still chose one, named Mukmuk, as their “virtual only” counterpart.

After the Olympic logo design was leaked the day before the 2005 announcement, organizers were extremely tight lipped until today’s news conference at a Surrey school. They apparently didn’t do any development on the characters on internet-enabled computers, to ensure the images or information wouldn’t slip out.

The characters were designed by the Vancouver and Los Angeles-based Meomi Design. Their characters have been used as part of iGoogle, a customizable homepage option from Google, as well as Electronic Arts, Girls Inc., Time Out Magazine, Cyworld, Nick Jr., Bang-on Clothing, and CBC4Kids.

The Vancouver organizers have a CDN$46-million merchandising program; previous Olympics have made as much as $100 million from mascot-related products.

René Fasel, Chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Coordination Commission commented that “The IOC welcomes these imaginative new additions to the Olympic Family as they take their place on the world stage today – a symbol of the Games and of Canada. We know that when Olympians, Paralympians and visitors from around the globe arrive in British Columbia at Games time, they will fall under the spell of these captivating characters.”

The characters first appearance will be at a Bay store in the Lower Mainland; HBC is a major sponsor of the Games. They will then make their way to schools, take a break through the Christmas season, and fly to Ottawa for the Winterlude festival.

Top 5 Things To Ask About A School For Massage Therapy

By Mike McAuthor

In the course of studying all of the different options when it comes to massage therapy schools, I have generated five useful questions to ask yourself when studying the huge amount of therapeutic massage schools you can attend. Like any great career change, certain facts must be studied before you dive in. A normal sized city will have at least 5 or more therapeutic massage schools in the area. Research has shown that one therapeutic massage school can be quite unique from the next. Hence, your first large choice should be which school to attend. Hopefully, the following questions will help you come to a decision.

Question number 1: How do I pay for it? When you see the cost of becoming a licensed massage therapist against the cost of a bachelors degree, even one which runs in upwards of $9,000.00 is far less expensive than a 4 year college alternative, which currently would cost $72,000 or more to complete.. Even so, most of us do not have $5,000 – $9,000 lying around to place in an education. Therefore, financial aid is important to consider. Consider this: All federal loans and grants for education can be paid only to students attending federally accredited schools. Look for a reputable accreditation, such as the Integrative Massage & Somatic Therapies Accreditation Council, which has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a specialized accrediting agency.

Question number 2: How can massage therapy school hours function with the rest of my responsibilities? Just about all massage therapy schools are mindful that the people who are attending their curriculum have other commitments as well. Nearly all students have to hold down jobs while attending therapeutic massage school, while others have children at home. If you are one of the many people with obligations outside of the classroom, don’t dispair. Most schools offer a variety of schedules to choose from.

Question number 3: How expensive is it going to be? School tuition can vary anywhere from $6.00 to $17.00 per hour of training! The average generally falls around $9.00 or $10.00 per credit hour. Some schools include the cost of what you need. Add up what is included verses what you are called upon to buy before you invest.

Question number 4: About how long will it take from beginning to end? Schools have a full variety when it comes how much investment is required to finish. Therapeutic massage schools can range anywhere from 6 – 15 months, or longer. Keeping this information in mind, you must ask yourself two important questions in regards to how long you put forth in your education. Remember, if you are sped through a program you have a better chance of missing out on something (though occasionally you may come across a school which can provide an adequate education in 6 months). On the other side of the coin, you have got to also consider how much money you might lose if you are learning rather than working.

Question number 5: How far away is the massage therapy school? If you have narrowed it down to a couple of schools, choose the closer one! With the cost of gas rising, congestion getting worse all the time, road rage, and wear-and-tear on your vehicle, location should be a priority. Picture yourself making the same drive 5 days a week before you choose that nice little school across town.

Again let me compliment you on your career choice. Massage school can be one of the brightest life-changing choices you will ever make. I hope that these tips will turn out helpful for you as you run your adventure into one of the greatest professions in the world.

BBC: Ethiopian famine aid ‘siphoned off’ to buy weapons according to rebels, report

Friday, March 5, 2010

An investigation by the BBC has revealed that millions of dollars in famine relief aid money, including the money raised from the charity supergroup Band Aid and the Live Aid concert held by Bob Geldof, was “siphoned off” by Ethiopian rebels to buy weapons. One rebel said that at least US$ 95 million (£63 million) from — Western governments and private charities — was diverted into rebel coffers.

This was also noted in a declassified Central Intelligence Agency assessment of the famine situation titled Ethiopia: Political and Security Impact of the Drought, in which the report states, “Some funds that insurgent organizations are raising for relief operations, as a result of increased world publicity, are almost certainly being diverted for military purposes.”

During the 1984–1985 famine, Ethiopia was fighting Eritrean and Tigray rebels in those two northern provinces, although Eritrea has since gained its independence. Since the countryside was out of the government’s control, aid was brought in from neighboring Sudan. Some aid came in the form of food, while other aid came as cash which would be used by the aid agencies to buy grain from Ethiopian farmers.

Rebels would disguise themselves as traders and merchants to get their hands on the currency. “I was given clothes to make me look like a Muslim merchant. This was a trick for the NGOs,” said Gebremedhin Araya, a senior member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Some funds that insurgent organizations are raising for relief operations, as a result of increased world publicity, are almost certainly being diverted for military purposes.

One such aid worker that brought the grain was Max Peberdy, who worked for the charity Christian Aid. Peberdy is seen in a photo with Araya buying grain.

Araya said that only some of the sacks were filled with grain; the rest were filled with sand. The transaction was overseen by a member of the Relief Society of Tigray (REST), the humanitarian wing of the TPLF. The money was then given to TPLF leaders, including chairman Meles Zenawi, who has been Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 1991. Zenawi has not commented on the allegations.

Peberdy disputes the claims that he was duped, saying, “As far as we were concerned and as far as we were told by REST, the people we were dealing with were merchants.” He added, “It’s 25 years since this happened, and in the 25 years it’s the first time anybody has claimed such a thing.”

However, an exiled TPLF commander who lives in the Netherlands, Aregawi Berhe, is backing Araya’s story. He said the group got their hands on over US$100 million (£66 million) of which 95% went to buy weapons and build up a hardliner Marxist party inside the rebel movement. The remaining five percent would go to famine victims. Berhe told the BBC that the group would put on a “drama” to get the money. Berhe said, “The aid workers were fooled.”

In response to the allegations, the charity Christian Aid issued a statement saying, “There are allegations in the story which are against all of Christian Aid’s principles and our initial investigations do not correspond to the BBC’s version of events.”

I was given clothes to make me look like a Muslim merchant. This was a trick for the NGOs.

Nick Guttmann, who is director of emergency relief operations for the group, says the “story has to be put into context”. “We were working in a major conflict, there was a massive famine and people on all sides were suffering,” Guttmann said, adding, “Both the rebels and the government were using innocent civilians to further their own political ends.”

Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who help organized Live Aid, said, “We are talking about a disgruntled, exiled general. The essence of the report also is not just about Live Aid. It’s that all monies going into Tigray — that would be Oxfam, Save the Children, UNICEF and Christian Aid — somehow, we were all duped and gulled. And that’s simply not the case. It just didn’t happen.”

Mars rover Opportunity successfully escapes sand trap

Monday, June 6, 2005

The Mars rover Opportunity has successfully escaped from a sand trap. JPL engineers cheered when images returned from Mars showed the rover’s wheels were free. Engineers worked for nearly five weeks to carefully maneuver the rover out of the sand dune.

“After a nerve-wracking month of hard work, the rover team is both elated and relieved to finally see our wheels sitting on top of the sand instead of half buried in it,” said Jeffrey Biesiadecki, a JPL rover mobility engineer.

Traction was difficult in the ripple-shaped dune of windblown dust and sand that Opportunity drove into on April 26. In the weeks following, the rover churned 192 meters (629 feet) worth of wheel rotations before gaining enough traction to actually move one meter (about three feet). The rover team directed the drives in cautious increments from May 13 through June 4.

“We did careful testing for how to get Opportunity out of the sand. Then we patiently followed the strategy developed from the testing, monitoring every step of the way,” Biesiadecki said. “We hope to have Opportunity busy with a full schedule of scientific exploration again shortly.”

Opportunity’s next task is to examine the site to provide a better understanding of what makes that ripple different from the dozens of similar ones the rover easily crossed. “After we analyze this area, we’ll be able to plan safer driving in the terrain ahead,” said JPL’s Jim Erickson, rover project manager.

Both Spirit and Opportunity have worked in harsh Martian conditions much longer than anticipated. They have been studying geology on opposite sides of Mars for more than a year of extended missions since successfully completing their three-month primary missions in April 2004.

“The first thing we’re going to do is simply take a hard look at the stuff we were stuck in,” said Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He is the principal investigator for the Mars rovers’ science instruments. “After that, we will begin a cautious set of moves to get us on our way southward again. South is where we think the best science is, so that’s still where we want to go.”

Shortly after landing in January 2004, Opportunity found layered bedrock that bore geological evidence for a shallow ancient sea. Spirit did not find extensive layered bedrock until more than a year later, after driving more than two miles and climbing into a range of hills known as “Columbia Hills.”

Minnesota to require 25% renewable energy production

Saturday, February 24, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota signed a bill into law on Thursday that requires the state to generate a significant amount of its energy needs from renewable sources.

The amount of power generated by wind turbines in the state stands now at 895 megawatts. An additional 5,000 megawatts of energy from renewable sources will need to be added to Minnesota’s electricity resources, which is roughly eight times more than the amount that currently comes from renewables.

The bill signed by the Governor requires energy companies to provide 25 percent of power from renewable sources by 2025.

Xcel Energy, which supplies approximately half of the electricity in the state, is required to provide 30 percent from renewable sources by 2020.

Evergrande real estate firm makes missed September bond payment, avoids default

Saturday, October 23, 2021

China property giant Evergrande Group wired USD83.5 million in interest owed in an offshore bond from September 23 on Thursday, temporarily averting default, according to a Reuters source and Chinese newspaper Securities Times.

The wire to a Citibank fiduciary account following a 30-day grace period came after assurances by various members of the Chinese government, Reuters reported. At a Beijing forum Wednesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He described the risks as controllable, and chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission Yi Huiman said that while authorities needed to curb excessive debt more broadly by “improv[ing] the effectiveness of the constraint mechanism on debt financing”, the matter would be dealt with properly.

Once China’s top real estate developer, Evergrande had accumulated approximately USD305 billion in liabilities, two per cent of the Chinese gross national product, after “dwindling resources” cut its value by 80%, according to Reuters. September data revealed Chinese home sales by value fell by nearly 17% year-on-year, according to The Guardian, and fears over its default led to a slowdown in China’s third quarter GDP growth to a year low of 4.9%. Two sale negotiations with rival developers Hopson Development and Yuexiu, valued at USD2.6 billion and USD1.7 billion, respectively, were suspended, reportedly due to a lack of consent by the government of Guangdong province currently overseeing Evergrande’s restructuring.

News of Evergrande’s remittance caused its shares to rise by as much as 7.8% this morning after a two-week pause in trading for the anticipated sale of 50.1% in Evergrande Property Services Group, and offering some reprieve for bondholders, according to Reuters. Portfolio manager at GaoTeng Global Asset Management James Wong, interviewed by The Guardian, called the news “a positive surprise”, adding “[i]f Evergrande pays this time, I don’t see why it won’t pay the next time.” Jun Rong Yeap for IG Asia pte., interviewed by Bloomberg, said the report “overturned” the narrative “that Evergrande will face difficulty in securing cash ahead”.

Further missed payments are due October 29 and November 11 after similar 30-day grace periods; including yesterday’s USD83.5 million, nearly USD280 million is owed to bondholders.

Stocks have been down for many major Chinese developers: Reuters Wednesday reported year-to-date stock prices fell 87.8% for Sinic Holdings, currently in Fitch Ratings’ ‘restricted default’ after failing to make an October 18 bond payment valued, according to The Guardian, at USD246 million; 80.2% for Evergrande itself; 78.3% for E-House, 58.5% for Fantasia Holdings and 54.6% for Kaisa Group, which defaulted in 2015 and had bonds reach record lows.

Estimates of the Chinese real estate market’s size range from 16 to 25% of the Chinese gross domestic product, according to The Guardian. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aim to transform the country’s economy from one of debt-fuelled “inflated” growth to one of improved “quality and returns” included imposing regulations on developers that limited their capacity to borrow. A Guardian comment piece from economist George Magnus published on October 15 made reference to China’s “ghost cities” and “rampant credit creation” that has given rise to high vacancy rates and the “financialisaton of housing”.

Canada’s Defence Minister visits Canadian troops in Afghanistan

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

As public opinion wavers over Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan, Defence minister Gordon O’Connor made an appearance to shore up support among the troops for the Afghan mission.

O’Connor disembarked a Canadian Forces Hercules C-130 transport plane dressed in full desert battle fatigues and boots, and was greeted by Lieut.-Gen. Michel Gauthier at Canada’s base on Kandahar airfield. “I’m here on this visit to get three perspectives – One is what’s happening on the ground here. The other in Kabul for what’s happening on the national level, and then I’m going to Pakistan for the international perspective.”

The minister’s visit comes as a surge of violence is sweeping across southern Afghanistan. Military casualties have run high since August 3rd, claiming the lives of eight Canadian troops, one British soldier and many more civilians. Much of the violence comes at the hands of suicide bomb attacks against resupply convoys amid growing frustration at the presence of foreign troops in Afghan territory. In the hours before O’Connor’s arrival another suicide bomber targeted a Canadian convoy, killing two civilians and injuring a third.

Military officials took the opportunity to highlight concerns for the troops on the ground who are complaining of poor equipment, vehicles and accommodation.

Why Locate Your Offices To London?}

Why Locate your offices to London?

by

Shivani Gurtu-Louth-4587Five major airports provide London businesses with International links. Central London also offers the convenience of the Eurotunnel, with many additional transport routes to neighbouring countries, strengthening UK business interests with those of the European mainland. Europe’s close proximity has become a useful tool for companies wishing to expand or break into European markets: business trips to most European countries can be completed in a day.

London is also well served by motorway links around the UK, providing expediency when it comes to transport of goods or for attending UK-based business conferences. There can be little doubt that the capital offers everything a business could need, regardless of its size. Finding a property to suit could prove difficult if you are unaware of the city’s geography and what each area may have to offer your company. To find the best commercial property in London, companies are well advised to hire the services of a commercial property agent.

A commercial property agent in London will have data at their fingertips, detailing the types and locations of available commercial property in London. In the shadow of the credit crunch, they will also be able to shed on the most economical areas of London to relocate your business. The capital is experiencing a slump in the commercial property rental market.

Using a commercial property estate agent in London could put you in touch with the best deals on the market, as landlords are forced to reduce their rents to avoid leaving commercial property sitting empty. In the current climate, it seems that securing good commercial property in London could be quicker than ever before.

Recent surveys show that many companies are finding suitable offices after viewing only between six and ten potential locations, which is almost half the figure of two years ago. Your commercial property agent can organise viewings on your behalf, according to the structures you have given them to work within, such as price and the services available locally.

Given the state of the office rental market, a good commercial property agent in London should be able to negotiate favourable terms on your behalf. Whilst this takes some skill and expertise, the market is currently a tenants market, with landlords offering advantageous terms to tempt businesses to occupy their premises, rather than leaving properties empty and unused.

Local knowledge is also a strong attribute for the commercial agent. Using their expertise, they can advise you on the best and most cost-effective services available to you in any particular area. This not only may see you forging links with other companies that may result in future business, but also ensures that your company is getting the best value for money. In addition, a commercial property agent in London may be able to identify potential business hot-spots for you; the areas in which your services will be most in demand.

As the rents in London begin to fall, competition for commercial office space looks set to become fierce between tenants. This is another reason to use a commercial estate agent. Not only can they save you valuable time and money by ensuring that the process goes smoothly, but they can also help you beat the competition and secure the best property for your needs.
