2008 AutoTronics Taipei: Participants from IT industry to participate COMPUTEX uncertainly

Friday, April 11, 2008

Since the AutoTronics Taipei was held from 2006, companies from electronic and automobile-related industries steadily made their stages and a good complementary in this trade show.

Before the first holding in 2006, because of the establishment of Car Electronics Pavilion in 2005 TAITRONICS Autumn (Taipei International Electronic Autumn Show), it (the pavilion) ever became a hot topic in these 2 industries. And eventually, Yulon Group recruited their sub-companies grouping their own pavilion to showcase automobile parts, accessories, and applications.

Currently, automobile navigation, mobile entertainment, and road safety, were included in modern automotive devices. But in a keynote speech of TARC Pavilion, Jamie Hsu (Consultant of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of the China) pointed out several threats and opportunities on the automotive industry, his words also echoed a notable quote by Yi-cheng Liu (Chairman of Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association): “The automobile industry shouldn’t be monopolized by a company or its own industry. If this industry want to be grown up, it [the industry] should do more optimizations and transformations with the other related industries like IT and electronic.”

Although some participants like Renesas, Fujitsu, MiTAC, TomTom NV, and Agilent ever participated in Taipei IT Month, CeBIT, or Computex Taipei, but there were varied comments for participation on Computex 2008.

Computex 2008 will do a significant growth, of course. But we [Aglient] still consider to cooperate with Intel in a forum rather than showcasing in Computex.
We [the MiTAC Group] will appoint different sub-companies to participate in different trade shows by different industries. That’s why we showcase the same products in different shows by different sub-companies.

Renesas Technology, a participant of Computex 2007, won’t showcase in Computex 2008, but Fujitsu and TomTom both declared to participate in the 2008 Taipei IT Month.

Generally in the automobile industry, progressively conformed by the other industries, its success should depend on collaborations between different and similar industries because “not any company can do any monopoly in any industry” even though the automobile industry will become a “trillion industry” not only in Taiwan.

Nigerian anti-corruption officials arrest former governor James Ibori

Friday, December 14, 2007

Nigerian police arrested former Delta State governor James Ibori Wednesday on charges of abuse of office, corruption, and money laundering.

According to a statement by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibori was picked up at a private residence in the Asokoro District of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja. Ibori was to be arraigned yesterday at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. He is facing a total of 103 charges.

James Ibori had been governor of Delta for the past eight years, until leaving office in May, 2007. Although he earned a modest US$25,000 per year as governor, he had reportedly accumulated more than $35 million in foreign accounts. Ibori’s UK assets have been frozen while the Metropolitan police investigate further. Should the money be deemed the proceeds of crime, it could be transferred back to the Nigerian government.

Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua was elected in May on a platform of battling corruption in the government. Since taking office, Yar’Adua has overseen the arrest of five other former governors on corruption offences. James Ibori had supported the president in his election bid.

Law enforcement officials and anti-corruption advocates in the UK and Nigeria have complained that the Nigerian attorney-general was interfering and slowing down investigations. The attorney-general, Michael Aondoakaa, has denied the allegations.

In a December, 2007 paper by the global corruption watchdog Transparency International, entitled Report on the Transparency International Global Corruption Barometer 2007, Nigeria was determined to have one of the highest rates of corruption, evaluated as a percentage of citizens reporting they paid a bribe to obtain a service.

Two Iraqi women, one pregnant, killed by US soldiers

Friday, June 2, 2006

Two women, one of them about to give birth, were shot dead by US forces as they rode in a car headed toward a maternity hospital in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad, according to witnesses and Iraqi police Capt. Laith Mohammed.

Nabiha Nisaif Jassim, 35, and her 57-year-old cousin, Saliha Mohammed Hassan, were killed by the gunfire, according to the Associated Press. Jassim, a mother of two, was pregnant with her third child; doctors at a nearby hospital tried unsuccessfully to save the baby.

Khalid Nisaif Jassim told reporters that he was rushing his sister to the hospital for childbirth. “I was driving my car at full speed because I did not see any sign or warning from the Americans. It was not until they shot the two bullets that killed my sister and cousin that I stopped.

“God take revenge on the Americans and those who brought them here,” he added. “They have no regard for our lives.”

A US military statement released Friday disputed the account. “A local national sedan entered a clearly marked prohibited area near coalition troops at an observation post,” the statement read. “As the vehicle neared the troop location and failed to stop despite repeated visual and auditory signals, disabling shots were fired into the vehicle. The vehicle stopped, changed direction, and quickly departed the area.”

The e-mailed statement to the Associated Press also expressed regret for the loss of life, noting that “coalition forces go to great lengths to prevent them.”

The Washington Post reported that the women’s bodies were “wrapped in sheets and lying on stretchers outside the Samarra General Hospital before being taken to the morgue, while residents pointed to bullet holes on the windshield of a car and a pool of blood on the seat”.

The US military has increased the number of investigations into charges of misconduct against US troops, most notably following the alleged mass murder of as many as 24 civilians in the town of Haditha, west of Baghdad. Initially, 15 civilians and eight insurgents were reported dead in gunfire following a roadside bombing that killed a US Marine. Military spokesman Major-General William Caldwell said, “there are three or four (investigations) at least at this time” and that they are in “the first stages.”

Rotorua, New Zealand bans criminals from CBD

Wednesday, August 2, 2006

Rotorua has banned criminals with five or more dishonesty convictions from entering the Central Business District (CBD). The criminals will be issued with trespass notices banning them from the main streets of Rotorua.

Eleven out of twelve councillors, including the Rotorua mayor, supported the by-law along with support from the police.

Kevin Winters, Mayor of Rotorua, said “The ban also had the support of local businesses, who wanted an end to the thefts, assaults, shoplifting and other street crime on Rotorua streets. Crime was an issue in the area. Five strikes and you’re out.”

The trespass notice would ban the offenders from the CBD for three months, but would allow them to enter if they had appointments or emergencies.

They would have CCTV cameras operated by volunteers to catch offenders breaking the trespass notice.

However Bill Hodge, constitutional law expert, said “It’s the king’s highway and you’ve got a right to go down the king’s highway…so I don’t think they can treat you as a trespasser for going down the street.”

The councillors would review the impact of the legislation in three years time.

Rotorua already has legislation similar to this one acting at the Kuirau Park, Government Gardens and the Lakefront.

Get Rid Of Errors In Winter Exercise

Get Rid of Errors in Winter Exercise

by

lin he

The first misunderstanding is that long-distance running can be an alternative to warm-up activities. Muscles and joint tissue activities of body are not high, the flexibility of ligaments and stretching will also be obviously slowed down, the reason is that the exposure to the cold air will affect people\’s body. If one can fully do warm-up activities, he or she will get away from the trouble of muscle strain. But running alone is not a way of warm-up. There is the second myth, which is about clothes matters, or we can say, light clothes are not equal to speed. Before exercise, the body is still at the room temperature and then strip too much cold air to the lungs and bronchi, and stomach has a negative stimulus. The most serious thing is that it can easily lead to disease.

There is a third myth, which is about whether exercise can better exercise your body or not. Strenuous exercise and oppositional movements have high standards for body\’s flexibility and strength. If you take exercise in winter, you are more likely to injure, because the body is more rigid in winter. The fourth myth is that do exercise early in the morning does not mean getting good results. It is easy to come up with the phenomenon of inversion layer actually and it is not good for all kinds of harmful gases and dust to diffuse. Especially in the air before sunrise, a lot of impurities and germs exist. If you do exercise by contacting to this kind of air condition for a long time, it is apt to cause chronic respiratory diseases. Furthermore, cardiovascular function in six o\’clock is worse, if there is cardiovascular disease, it will be easy-to-onset The fifth misunderstanding is that people should run through snow and shine. Mornings of winter are often foggy, sometimes with severe air pollution. If you go exercise at this time, a lot of dust in the air, pathogenic microorganisms and other harmful substances will inevitably inhaled, can lead to chest tightness, difficulty breathing, severe cases can cause rhinitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, conjunctivitis and other diseases, and even lead to heart vascular disease. Therefore, winter morning exercise also may take the climate into consideration. It is not a good choice to do exercise in a day when the air pollution index is high. The sixth error is that it would be better if we do exercise indoors rather than outdoors in winter. In fact, people accustomed to close windows and doors in winter, but indoor air pollution is often heavy, it is not suitable for exercising, although the warm temperature indoors. The body will be constantly stimulated by the cold air if we do physical exercise outdoors; it also can enhance the body resistance. Furthermore, sunlight can make a contribution to the effect of disinfection, also can help the body to absorb elements of calcium and phosphorus. If the weather is not bad, pollution is not bad, it will be good for growing young soldiers to do exercise out of the room. There is also a saying that fast physical exercise will be good, but it is a wrong saying. In fact, the human body\’s muscle fiber is fragile; the bone density is also low in winter. Muscle strain and bone fiber fracture will appear through over exercise. The worst case may cause chronic muscle damage and even fracture. Nike Free Run 2

Sarkozy appoints François Fillon as Prime Minister of France

Thursday, May 17, 2007File:Francois fillon1.jpg

The new President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy has appointed François Fillon to head the new French government. Fillon’s predecessor Dominique de Villepin stepped down yesterday, and formally handed over the post during a ceremony today.

The nomination did not come as a surprise after the British newspaper the Financial Times had reported on May 8 that Sarkozy had introduced Fillon to Tony Blair in a telephone conversation.

François Fillon (53) has been the political advisor of Sarkozy in the UMP for the past 2 years, and he was Sarko’s campaign leader during the recent presidential elections. Fillon has experience in negotiating with the trade unions, having undertaken controversial reforms of the 35-hour workweek and the pension system. Sarkozy in his inauguration speech on Wednesday reiterated his plans to reform the French labour and social system, and Fillon will have to oversee these reforms as the new Prime Minister. Sarkozy said he wants to make the economy more flexible and lessen social tensions.

I expect I’ll end up being the first French premier with a Welsh wife.

The Guardian reported that Fillon is an Anglophile; his wife Penelope Clarke, with whom he has 5 children, was born in Wales. Ideologically, Fillon is being described as a moderate left-leaning member of the conservative UMP party.

Fillon had his first experience as a minister in 1993 when he became Minister for the Higher education and Research under PM Édouard Balladur. He later became Minister for the Post office, Telecommunications and Space, then Minister for the social Affairs, Work and Solidarity, and finally Minister for national Education, the Higher education and Research. At the university, he studied public law and political sciences.

Sarkozy might announce his cabinet of 15 ministers as early as Friday, half of which are going to be women, he said. Fillon will lead the UMP in the parliamentary elections next month. A poll on Wednesday predicted a 1.5% increase in votes for the UMP, up to 40%, compared to 28% status-quo for the allied socialists.

Reports say that Sarkozy has offered the foreign minister post to Bernard Kouchner, co-founder of Médecins Sans Frontières, who is seen as being on the left in French politics.

The Main Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Led Pl Bulbs}

Submitted by: Carol Oon

In 1907, when H. J. Round discovered electroluminescence – the principle that permitted the first LED PL bulbs to be created – no one was able to find a use for this discovery.

Some years later (in 1962), when Nick Holonyak put together the first light emitting diodes that provided visible light, in other words, the first LED PL Bulbs, their utility became obvious in every scientists’ mind. Even though, at that moment, the cost of using this source of light was too high and no one seemed to be able to use it on a large scale, the inventors did not abandon the idea and, in a short while, the light made by a LED PL bulb could be used by anyone in the world.

The classic methods of obtaining light, like incandescence and fluorescence, are now losing ground. When comparing the advantages and disadvantages of using LED PL bulbs instead of an incandescent bulb, everybody seems to agree that using LEDs is safer, cheaper, and more decorative.

The problem with incandescent bulbs is that a great part of the energy they needed was used to bring the filaments to incandescence. With a LED PL bulb, there is no need to bring a metal to incandescence, because the principle to obtain light is different. In a world of ever less energy resources, of desperate struggle to preserve nature and prevent global warming, any method of saving energy is important for saving the Earth.

More than that, the light emitted by LED PL bulbs can be easily modulated and oriented in different directions without the help of mirrors or reflectors. Moreover, from the very beginning, in the fabrication process, this type of bulb can be made to bring angular light, from a few degrees to almost 120 degrees. LED PL bulb can be easily manufactured in different shapes, from a bulb similar to classic incandescent bulbs, to a rigid or flexible ribbon of continuous light.

Compared to the light given by classical bulbs, which can deliver just a spot of yellow light, the one emitted by LEDs is closer to the natural light, as it is continuous and white. Furthermore, it is safer for the human eye on a long term utilization.

The price of a regular incandescent bulb is a little bit lower than the LEDs, but considering the lower energy cost and the larger life span, the cost on the long term is far more affordable in case of LEDs.

For the moment, the disadvantages of LEDs are the following:

– they need a very stable electric source;

– they can only work at temperatures below 80 Celsius.

The first problem is the main cause that reduces the LED’s viability. Major electric power fluctuation can easily make the LEDs useless.

All in all, everyone can see that the use of LED PL bulbs can lower the costs of energy, can make you spend less money with the bulbs if you have a stable energy source, and can make you feel better with the sort of light they emit.
