SpaceX launches fifth resupply rocket to International Space Station

Sunday, January 11, 2015

Space transport services company SpaceX launched their fifth Dragon resupply vehicle to the International Space Station yesterday. The spacecraft — containing more than 2,200kg (5,000 pounds) of food, experiments, and spare parts — successfully decoupled from the launch rocket and should reach the station early tomorrow.

The launch was postponed from Tuesday because of a technical issue on the second stage of the rocket. The shipment includes replacements for cargo aboard the spaceship Cygnus, destroyed during a failed launch in October. Cygnus belonged to the rival Orbital Sciences Corporation.

SpaceX tried unsuccessfully to land the Falcon 9 delivery rocket for reuse. The rocket reached an unmanned barge in the Atlantic, but landed too hard. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the landing “bodes well for the future, though”. The attempted salvage of the rocket was experimental, using new retractable fins. Next time they will add extra hydraulic fluid, Musk said.

The ship’s support equipment was damaged but, according to Musk, the barge is intact. Last year saw two successful SpaceX splashdowns but landing on such a small target as a ship is unique.

Recycling Tips}

Submitted by: Tions Werever

You can take care of the environment and do all the recycling you can no matter if youre at home, at work, at school or outside. Theres literally thousands of things, most of them very simple and trivial, you could do that can really help make a difference. In the following text, youll find a pretty extensive list of things you could do, and thats not even half of everything that can be done. Try doing just a couple of these things and youll be a great part of making our world more eco-friendly and sustainable. If you are a company and you need a professional approach to recycling you can consider www.sorema.it.

1.Dont throw away old magazines. You can use them to cut out interesting pictures or articles to put in your journal or scrapbook. You can also use the paper from magazines for some fun and quirky origami projects. You can even donate them to doctors or dentists waiting rooms where theyll do more than good than just being in the trash.

2.Avoid aerosol cans. Theyre highly pressurized and dangerous, not to mention harmful to the ozone layer. Use products that come in refillable or reusable glass or metal bottles.

3.Carry your own bags when you go shopping. The plastic bags you get at stores rarely get recycled, so always carry your own cloth or paper bags.

4.Buy products that always get recycled in your community. Plan ahead and think through every shopping trip. Whats the use of buying sustainable, recyclable products when theres no designated recycling facility anywhere near you.

5.Donate old toys, clothes and other usable household items you no longer want. There are good uses for those in homeless shelters or orphanages, and theres no need to throw them away.

6.Make cleaning rags from your old clothes. Theyre washable and better for the environment than regular polyester rags.

7.Stop using disposable diapers. They comprise the majority of trash at landfills and cant be recycled. Use cloth diapers you only need a few of them and they can be washed as many times as necessary.

8.Dont throw food scraps and other organic waste into the trash. Use them for composting your garden.

9.Get to know your trash! Knowing what yard waste is and whats not makes all the difference in recycling. Yard waste doesnt include the following items: leftover food, fruits and vegetables, rocks or concrete, large branches, logs, large pieces of wood, pet waste, yucca plant leaves, palm fronds or other fibrous materials.

10.Recycle your spam mail! Advertising materials you always get in the mail can be recycled with other paper and cardboard products.

11.Spongy plastic items take forever to recycle and decompose. Avoid using plastic or Styrofoam cups and opt for glass or crystal ones. If you receive any similar plastic items, recycle them immediately.

12.Fertilize your garden. Store-bought fertilizers and filled with chemicals and very expensive. You can make your own from organic waste from your kitchen, and reduce all waste you produce by as much as 25%.

13.Always make a shopping list. Only buy the things you need, thatll be consumed before they expire. Perishable foods make more than 50% of all organic waste and take up unnecessary space at landfills.

14.Buy everything in bulk. It eliminates all that unnecessary plastic packaging and saves you a lot of money.

15.Buy household cleaners and detergents that come in a concentrated form. It saves money and reduces the amount of packaging.

16.Use natural sponges and cotton or linen rags instead of paper towels.

17.Pack your lunches in reusable plastic or metal containers. Carry them in cloth or paper bags to eliminate the need for any extra plastic.

18.Use washable cloth strainers for your coffee machine instead of the traditional paper filters.

19.Reuse aluminum pie plates as containers for baking or freezing foods such as fruits and vegetables.

20.Dont throw away ceramic tiles. If they break or you just have them lying around, use them as trivets for hot pots and pans. They dont conduct heat and are more beautiful that regular plastic or cork ones.

21.Buy cosmetics and other personal hygiene products with minimal packaging that can be refilled and reused.

22.Cut old, torn towels and bedding into pieces and use them for cleaning. You can even donate them to animal shelters to be used as padding for dog and cat kennels.

23.Use old toothbrushes as cleaning tools. Theyre great for cleaning otherwise unreachable nooks and crannies.

24.Use old shower curtains to cover the floor and furniture when painting or redecorating the house.

25.Avoid using disposable razors. Instead, opt for those that have refillable cartridge or electric ones.

26.Buy liquid soap, shampoo and other similar items in refillable packaging.

27.Also buy all cleaning products in refillable bottles. It saves time, money, space and the environment.

28.Buy unbleached, organic toilet paper in bulk.

29.Buy organic deodorant. Its almost always refillable and better for your skin than regular ones.

30.Buy pump bottles instead of aerosol cans. The former can be easily recycled, while the latter cant.

31.When writing something, use both sides of the paper.

32.Help create a demand for recycled paper by only using recycled paper for writing and printing.

33.Donate to your local recycling facility or support them in any other way.

34.Recycle old phone books and cardboard boxes.

35.Buy milk in plastic containers or bottles instead of waxed boxes. Waxed boxes are non-recyclable and non-degradable.

Malaysian government warns citizens about Uncyclopedia

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.

The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.

The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.

There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.

Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:

Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.

…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”

There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Search-and-rescue dog that found 9/11 survivor to be cloned

Thursday, July 3, 2008

A German shepherd who recovered the last survivor of the September 11, 2001 attacks is to be cloned. His owner, James Symington, a former police officer from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada entered an essay writing contest about why his dog should be cloned.

Trakr, the 15 year old German shepherd suffering from degenerative neurological disorder, was the subject of a contest-winning essay about why Trakr should be cloned that was written by Symington. Trakr and Symington received Humanitarian Service Awards from Jane Goodall for their heroics at Ground Zero. Symington is now an actor of film and television, sometimes credited as Peter James.

BioArts International sponsored the essay-writing contest. Five more dogs are to be cloned by its Best Friends Again program. While Trakr will receive free replication, the other dogs will have to participate in an auction with a starting bid of US$100,000.

BioArts is going to send the DNA of the 6 dogs to Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Seoul, South Korea. A Sooam researcher said that the dog should be born in November.

So you did come up with great ideas and you just have this gut feeling that your invention

idea will fly in the market place, and that would mean more money for you.. Are you

thinking about how to protecting your Idea first? If you are not then you should definably think about that first before thinking about selling your invention and making all the money. You are

where you will find a lot of help-and you will quickly see how you can

sell your invention

So how do you a sell your idea?

The patenting, promoting, and marketing your own product by independent inventors is a the $300 million industry, estimates Bonnie Griffin Kaake , if you look around you will find a lot of companies out there who can help you get you sell an invention faster then if you was trying to do all the work your self. Yes, they will help you turn your idea into a hot new cool invention that you can sell.

they will not only help sell an invention idea they will also focus on the online marketplaces which you can also learn a lot from.

Using online marking they will quickly bring your idea to the corporate companies who is will to pay for your invention. If you wanna sell an invention they are ready to buy.

Hmmmm?, but you should be careful before paying a large amount of your hard earn cash to any of them who said yes, I will help you sell your invention.

The people who know the invention market place will tell you one thing. You have to know who you can sell your product to, and how much will they pay for it.

Plus why would they want to buy it. Please don t think you going to make a million dollars tomorrow just because you have an invention idea. So don t go out and get scam by companies who s promising you millions with out telling you about the process that will get you that.

You need to research for the right company the one that fits your needs-and that will get the job done efficiently.

Finally you can put you own product out there faster click here Invention ideas

Invention ideas

If you took the time protecting your idea then you need to spend more time trying to sell it, just because you protect an innovation that don t mean you can now make a million of of your idea unless you sell your invention.

You have to not pay a lot of money to get your invention out there because most patents don t make any money, Did you know you can protect an Idea by pending it as a patent.

So that mean you don t need to waste a lot of money fully patenting your idea not knowing if you going to sell it or not. and for a pending patent you would only pay a $100 dollars, because you will have to tweak that product before it come to a final project. Pending a patent would give you one year time to work on you project while it s also protected,

Inventing is like selling any other product when you think about the business aspect of it. I can definitely compare it to the online business world-because you have to create a sell pitch and you have to present that to to companies who you want to sell you invention to. If not you but the company thats going to help you sell your product will have to prepare a sell pitch before presenting it to the companies the want to sell it to.

You have different sell sheets explaining the Idea. You should find a mid size companY to help sell your idea, because the big guys also what big bucks Key says.

It s harder to get around the big companies, you should pitch your product to a sell manager and some who in marking after you know your idea is your.

Unless you have to big budget don t go for the guys who don t have the time to listen to your with your idea.

Fire burns home of late singer Johnny Cash

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

A fast-moving fire engulfed the home of late singer Johnny Cash on Tuesday. The lake-side home, located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was the home of the late singer and his wife, June Carter, from the late 1960s until their deaths in 2003.

The home was purchased by former Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb in 2006, and was undergoing renovations at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it is believed that a flammable wood preservative that construction workers had applied contributed to the speed in which the flames spread. Firefighters responded within 5 minutes of the fire breaking out. No workers were killed in the fire, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

“Maybe it’s the good Lord’s way to make sure that it was only Johnny’s house,” said Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys, who lived down the road from Cash. Neighbor Marty Stewart said “So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house—everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.” The home was where Cash wrote many of his hit songs, and appeared in the Cash music video for “Hurt“.

Concern about sovereign debt of some EU members roils markets

Friday, February 5, 2010

Global stock markets fell steeply on Thursday on investor concerns about the growing sovereign debts of European Union member states Greece, Portugal, and Spain. A report of a rise in weekly jobless claims in the United States contributed to the market gloom. The MSCI World index fell the most in over nine months. Currency and commodities markets also posted major moves.

If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything.

The euro fell more than one percent against the US dollar to an eight-month low; against the yen it fell 2.2%, approaching a one-year low. The price of crude oil fell 5% to US$73.14 per barrel and gold slid 4.4% to US$1,063 per ounce.

Greece’s Prime Minister, George Papandreou, announced an austerity program, but that is now threatened by plans by the largest trade union for a national strike. In 2009, Greece’s budget deficit was 12.7% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). Papandreou’s plan called for that to drop to 3% by 2012.

Gary Jenkins of Evolution Securities told the Financial Times, “[t]he risk aversion trade is back on as the debt problems of Europe are for the first time bringing down global markets. Corporate earnings may come in strongly [in the US], but investors are more concerned about the possible default of a sovereign European nation.”

“This is a sovereign problem, and it’s hitting everything,” said Keith Springer of Capital Financial Advisory Services to Reuters. “If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything. European banks will be in trouble and that will carry over to all stocks.”

“The focus is shifting toward Spain and Portugal, where the deficit-reduction plans have been far less ambitious than Greece,” said Kornelius Purps of UniCredit Markets & Investment Banking to Bloomberg.

Concerns in Portugal centered on political tension surrounding a regional spending bill. In Spain, the source of worry was reportedly because the government backed down from promised pension reform.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet sought to ease investor fears, in part by noting that the deficit in the US is expected to hit 10% of GDP in 2010, compared with about 6% in the eurozone. He said that he was “confident” that Greece is moving in the right direction.

Trichet did admit that it is of “paramount importance” for Greece, Portugal and Spain to get their public finances under control.

The Types Of Betting On Sports In Us Bookmaker Sites

Are you into sports? Well, would it be more exciting if you can not only enjoy the sports you love, but also cheer on your favorite team and make money out of it? Betting on sports allows you to not only enjoy the game, but make it more exciting by injecting it with some sports betting. When this is done responsibly, you not only become a spectator of the sports you love, but you are also able to become part of it. And if you are good in analysis and have great inside knowledge of the sports, with added luck you can actually make a lot of cash bybetting on sports.

Here are the types of bets in bookmaker sites in the US which you can choose from. Enjoy and good luck with betting on sports.

The Types of Betting on Sports in US Bookmaker Sites # 1: Run line, puck line or goal line bets

This type of betting is an option and is given as an alternative to people who play straight up/moneyline prices in the games of baseball, hockey and soccer. These systems showcase bets which are at a fixed point spread. The run line, puck line or goal line bets give higher payouts on the favored and lower payouts if you choose the underdog team. The rates, of course, are compared to the moneyline payout system.

The Types of Betting on Sports in US Bookmaker Sites #2: Future wagers

Okay, so betting is pretty much betting on the future outcome of an event. However, in this particular description, it is that event which will happen in the long term timesheet and is gauged by the passing of weeks or months. An example of this is in the NFL. As soon as the season begins, you can already have future wagers, specifically betting on who will win the Super Bowl. The season of the NFL starts in September but the champion would be announced in February so the payout will be given only at the time. The payout in this type of wager is huge.

The Types ofBetting on Sportsin US Bookmaker Sites #3: Head to head

In this type of betting, the bettor tries to correctly guess the result of the competing teams going against each other rather than the overall result. Sometimes this is called ending.

The Types of Betting On Sports In The US Bookmakers Site #4: Totalizators

Sometimes, this is called flexible rate bets. Totalizors make odds which are changing in actual time based on the exchange of the results of a game. These outcomes take into consideration the return rate of the US bookie that is offering the bet.

Cuba to embrace free software

Wednesday, May 18, 2005

On Tuesday, Juventud Rebelde reported that the Central Administration of Cuba is organizing a migration to free and open source software. The announcement was made during a free software workshop organized at the “Convención Internacional Informática 2005” by the director of the state office of information technology, Roberto del Puerto.

The plan is to use the Linux operating system as a base, though the administration currently uses Microsoft Windows. The transition is planned to be slow and involves organizational changes, development and creating a legal framework.

The Linux user base in Cuba is around 1,500 people and has its own Linux distribution. Cuba also has some free software developers and the University of Information Science, with over 6,000 students, has committed one department for the development of programs for Linux which is a good move towards open source

Lizards are capable of problem-solving, study shows

Friday, July 15, 2011

A tropical tree-dwelling lizard has succeeded in a problem-solving test by learning to associate the color of a cap with a food reward, contesting the stereotype that reptiles are extremely limited cognitively compared to birds and mammals. The cognitive abilities of reptiles have rarely been studied.

In a color discriminating task, the lizards learned to flip over the correctly colored cap to reveal a worm hidden underneath. The experiment was conducted at Duke University and the results, published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, suggest that the problem-solving abilities of reptiles may be greater than previously thought.

The Puerto Rican lizard, (an anole), used in the study, is a well-studied species, known to excel at foraging food by being acutely aware of movement. Several lizards of this species were collected from Puerto Rico for the experiment.

Researches first wanted to determine if the six lizards used in the study were able to figure out how to flip off the cap to obtain the food. The agile reptiles quickly learned to use one of two ways to move the cap: they closed their jaws on the edge of the cap and dragged it off the food, or ran into the cap with their heads, tipping it over and grabbing the food.

[The results] should cause researchers to re-evaluate what they think they know about the evolution of animal cognition.

The lizards were then given a choice between two caps; one was blue and the other was yellow and blue; under only one was the food reward of a worm. They quickly learned to distinguish which cap had the reward.

“They learned to associate the color of the [cap] with a food reward,” said Manual Leal, the Duke University researcher who led the study. Their success on a test that is based on worms and usually used on birds was “completely unexpected,” he said.

The lizards solved the problem in fewer tries than birds needed to flip the correct cap and pass the test, Leal explained. Lizards get just one chance per day because they eat less, while birds usually get up to six chances a day. Thus a mistake by a lizard means it must remember until the next day how to correct the mistake, Leal said.

And when the color of the caps was switched, after a few mistakes two of the lizards were able to figure out the trick. “We named these two Plato and Socrates,” said Leal.

Jonathan Losos, a biologist at Harvard University not involved in the study, said Leal’s experiment demonstrates that when faced with a new situation, most of the lizards were able to solve the problem. They had the ability to figure out the trick and disregard their previous learning; a sign of a cognitively advanced animal that some mammalian species cannot easily do.

The results “should cause researchers to re-evaluate what they think they know about the evolution of animal cognition,” Losos said.
