Foreign governments move to aid earthquake region

Monday, March 28, 2005

After facing criticism for being slow to act and initially giving too little after the December 26 Indonesian earthquake and tsunami, the United States government was quick to act when a massive earthquake hit Indonesia again March 28. U.S. State Department Adam Ereli said under orders of President George W. Bush, American embassy officials have been in contact with both Indonesia officials and the International Red Cross to coordinate international relief efforts and other foreign aid.

The two former U.S. presidents, Bill Clinton and the current president’s father, George H.W. Bush, already are heading up U.S. aid efforts in the region as the result of the last major temblor. “We still have people over there assisting from the first one, and they will be our first line of defense, once we know what kind of damage there is,” Pat McCrummen, spokesman for the American Red Cross told the Associated Press.

Although relief officials have been in contact with various governments, no specific pledge amount has been announced (as of 20:51, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)).

Facts About Cold Laser Therapy

Submitted by: Adrianna Notton

Cold laser therapy is a fairly new and experimental form of treatment that claims to cure a wide range of illness. As of right now, the FDA does not support this treatment since there is not enough evidence that the therapy can do what it claims. FDA warns that people should not mistaken this treatment for conventional laser surgery that has been effective in treating most cancers when used with chemotherapy and other treatments.

Many different supporters of cold laser therapy have made claims that this method can cure a wide range of ailments. Some people have compared the treatment to acupuncture. Like acupuncture, it can target trigger points in the body that cause chronic pain. It is supposed to mimic the benefits of deep tissue massage using laser photons that can stimulate tissue change.

Like conventional laser surgery, it has the potential to stimulate a change in cells. The problem with this idea is that light energy is enough to reverse damages made to cells. The biochemical increase in cell energy that is caused by the light energy is supposed to revitalize unhealthy, unstable cells. The problem here is that conventional light energy treatments usually kill unhealthy cells in the body to prevent them from spreading and growing.

The treatment has been used by doctors and veterinarians on patients that suffer from different forms of arthritis. People that have chronic or acute neck and/or back pain are advise by supporters to seek out this treatment. Doctors that have successfully used this treatment believe that low intensity from the light is enough to reduce pain and inflammation.

Other claims made state that the treatment can cure herpes and cerebral palsy but there is no evidence available to support these claims. The FDA has been trying to censor supporters because the claims made are considered outrageous. Other conditions that claim to be healed by this treatment involve high blood pressure, headaches, wrinkles and sexual transmitted diseases.

There are other people who are trying to make a connection between the treatment and smoking. Since smoking is considered an addiction, the treatment can balance the energy in the body to help a person overcome smoking, making it easier to quit. Advocates claim that the treatment works by releasing endorphins that can stimulate nicotine in the brain, however there is no research to state how the treatment will work long term.

Currently, there are no disadvantages to the practice other than it may not work. Advocates, which include both doctors and patients say that the therapy is simple and extremely safe. There is no worrying of having anything toxic chemicals enter the body. The procedure is non-invasive so there is no surgery involved.

Cold laser therapy has no side effects and is considered to be more effective than over the counter NSAIDs. The healing that is supposed to be felt is supposed to reduce the need of using medications or being involved in highly risky surgery. For people interested, the remedial treatment is supposed to be cost effective but discussion with a health care professional can help a person make the right medical decisions.

Australia men’s national wheelchair basketball team beat Japan 80-49 in final game of pool play

Saturday, July 21, 2012

Homebush Bay, New South Wales —Last night, the Australia men’s national wheelchair basketball team beat Japan 80–49 in their final game of pool play at the Rollers & Gliders World Challenge taking place at at the Sport Centre at the Sydney Olympic Park and are through to the first place match.

The contrast between the two teams was seen in their wheels: almost every Australian player had a four wheeled chair that gave them increased stability while every single Japanese player had three wheels, which gave them great maneuverability. Japan played the aggressor throughout the match, with several players aggressively blocking with wheelchair on wheelchair contact. Both sides were loud, chanting defense, defense, defense when their side was on that side of the court.

The first quarter was closely fought, with Japan racking up 5 by 5:54 left in the first. They successfully took a lead of 17–16 by the end of the first quarter. They were unable to hold the lead, with Australia holding a 40–24 lead at the end of the first half. Australia’s lead at the end of the third was 61–34. While Japan increased their total points in the fourth quarter, they failed to defend against Australia who continued to answer back basket for basket for the game to end 80–49.

Australia plays in the first place match later today. Their London Paralympic campaign starts on August 30 against South Africa.

Brazil’s Minas state stops sales of Toyota Corolla

Friday, April 23, 2010

Minas, one of the largest states of Brazil, has stopped the sale of the Toyota Corolla over safety concerns.

The move was made after nine Corolla customers reported that their cars automatically accelerated. The state public prosecutor’s office said in an online statement on Tuesday that the problem is blamed on accelerator pedals sticking underneath floor mats. Local government said the issue was “putting in danger the lives of occupants”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, sales of Corollas may resume when Toyota alters the floormats in its current models. Toyota has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems.

What Is The Difference Between A Latex Mattress And A Memory Foam Mattress?

By W.P. Allen Allen

People who are shopping for a new mattress often wonder what is the difference between the memory foam mattress and a latex mattress. The biggest difference between the latex and the memory foam is that, although latex is extremely comfortable and durable, it does not provide the same benefits that a memory foam mattress provides. And those benefits from memory foam are the relief of pressure points and the contour conforming softness that provides unparalleled support to your entire body. Many people will not decide between the two of them but actually combine them by using the latex mattress as a base for a memory foam top. This can be an excellent idea as it combines the strength and durability of the latex with the comfort and support of the memory foam.

A Latex Mattress

Latex is very durable and very dense. It has a very strong and thick core that will last for a very long time. What makes the durable and strong latex comfortable and soft are what are called “pincore holes”. The pincore holes are built into the latex and the more holes that you have in a mattress and the larger those holes are, the softer the mattress will become. There are different types of latex mattresses that have different size pincore holes in them. Some latex units even have more than one size of pincore hole in the same mattress. This is what are called “zones of comfort” in which one area may be more soft or more firm than another. For instance you could have your mattress be softer at the shoulders and more firm at the legs. You can find latex mattresses with many different types of material layered on top. Different types of tops are often added to latex units to make them softer and more comfortable.

A Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses are considered top of the line as far as sleep systems go. Because of the overall comfort and stability of the material, there really is no other type of bedding that can provide the sleep that this type of mattress can. This is one of the reasons why it is more expensive than most other mattresses. However because of the growing popularity of this mattress many manufacturers are lowing their prices. If you want to get top of the line units with state of the art foam (including units infused with aloe Vera and units that are created to cool you as you sleep) you’re going to have to pay top dollar which is usually anywhere between $2000 to $6000. But you can still find high quality memory foam mattresses for under $500.

Memory foam is composed of many tiny cells called memory cells. Memory cells work by absorbing your body heat and pressure. Once your body heat and pressure is absorbed they soften and this is what leads to the contouring and conforming to your body shape. No other bedding works quite like this. That is why memory foam is considered the best choice for those choosing a mattress.

Anti-whaling Sea Shepherd crew detained in South Africa

Saturday, January 28, 2006

After seven weeks in the Southern Ocean disrupting the Japanese whaling fleet, a Canadian registered anti-whaling ship, the Farley Mowat, has been detained by South African authorities.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel, its captain Paul Watson, and his crew, have been detained indefinitely. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) have placed a guard on the gangplank and are patrolling the ship.

The Farley Mowat, which sailed from Melbourne, Australia on December 6, was detained in Cape Town harbour, following a request from the Canadian government. A SAMSA official said the ship did not have the required certification.

“They don’t have the right certificates for the skipper, the first-mate or the chief engineer,” an official said. According to SAMSA, the detention adheres to Canadian maritime laws and followed correspondence from Canada, who requested that the authorities check the ship.

According to Scoop Independent, the ship and crew have been detained due to the International Maritime Organization’s ISPS Code. Under Canadian maritime law, both the captain and first officer should be Canadian nationals. Captain Paul Watson is Canadian, First Officer Alex Cornelissen is Dutch.

SAMSA claims that the Farley Mowat was not in possession of an international ship security certificate or a ship security plan.

This means the ship allegedly does not comply with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) — a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities. The code was developed in response to the perceived maritime threats to ships and port facilities in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

The official said the detention was in line with Canadian maritime laws and followed correspondence from Canada requesting the authorities check the ship.

However, Captain Paul Watson says political pressure from Japan is behind the detention of the boat. He says he does not have the necessary documentation required by officials as the boat is registered as a yacht and not a commercial vessel.

London, England — Yesterday at London’s Basketball Arena, the Canada women’s national wheelchair basketball team earned their first victory of the London Paralympics when they defeated the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team 57–50.

Canada took a one point lead into the second half, when the scores were 33–32 because of a last minute foul that sent Canada to the free throw line where they capitalized by making one of their shots. 4.5 point player Janet McLachlan and 2 point player Katie Harnock dominated in minutes played for Canada during the first half, playing all 20 minutes and leading their team in scoring with 11 first half points for McLachlan and 12 for Harnock. The Canadian team was loudly supported by spectators, earning more cheering from the largely Great Britain supporting fans than the Australians.

The second half saw Canada slowly increase their lead, keeping tied with Australia 4–4 in the first half of third, 6–4 in the last half of the third, 6–4 in the first half of the fourth, and 8–6 in the last half of the fourth. McLachlan finished the game as Canada’s leading scorer with 28 total, 17 in the second half. Harnock had a quieter second half only scoring 2 points to finish with 14. Cindy Ouellett was the team’s third leading scorer, finishing the game with ten.

The Canadian team supported their team from the bench, chanting “Get it out! Get it out!” when on defense and “Let’s go Canada” when on the offense. Other times, one player led the team in chanting support for their players on the court. The team was consistently louder than the Australian bench.

Throughout the game, the Canadians tipped themselves over more in their chairs than the Australians. Ouellett tipped once, and bounced in her chair, with a wheel leaving the ground as she attempted to block shots and steal the ball. Ouellett and Australian Cobi Crispin locked wheels, and required a break in the game where Australia’s coach came on to the court and removed Ouellett’s wheel to detach the pair before putting it back on again.

Following the game, Australia’s Amber Merritt said of playing Canada, “I have the utmost respect for Canada. They’re a great team, but we’ll refocus on the game tomorrow [against the Netherlands] and go out and play like we know we can, the Australian way.”

Prior to the start of the game, McLachlan was the team’s dominating player in the competition. She was ranked eighth in the competition in field goal percentage, and was Canada’a highest ranked player in this category. She ranked second in the tournament in total field goals made per game, with 12. Teammate Katie Harnock ranked eighth. Tara Feser ranked fourth in the tournament for 2 point field goal percentage at 57.1%, while McLachlan ranked ninth with 50.0%. McLachlan was second in 2 point field goals made per game, at 12. Harnock was tied for first with Mexico’s Floralia Estrada Bernal in the competition for 3 point field goal percentage at 20%, and was ranked second in the tournament for most 3 point field goals made with one.

As a team coming into the game, Canada was ranked sixth in total field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage, sixth in average rebounds per game, second in fouls, and last in turnovers.

Coming into this game, Canada had lost their first game 70–59 to the Netherlands. They are scheduled to play Brazil today.

Email Archiving Appliance Business Describes Need For Small Business Record Compliance

By Robin Bingeman

London, UK – Some American small businesses assume that rules regulating electronic records aren’t relevant to them or they can’t muster the staff or time to manage the issue, notes Robin Bingeman, from the Cryoserver email archiving appliance company. However, the end result of not storing emails sufficiently can have serious consequences, even for businesses that are one-person operations.

Any dentist, doctor, or medical clinic, for instance, must adhere to the provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which necessitates that all patient records divulging medical or personal information must stay confidential.

If a company does financial business, it must comply with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations that require institutions to retain records of monetary transactions for a minimum of six years. Or, if a business processes credit card transactions, it must obey rules that require maintenance of information privacy. Absent some sort of compliance solution, most companies would find it tough to conform to these regulations.

“These rules can seem somewhat intimidating,” observes Bingeman. “But, there’s help available. An archiving appliance such as Cryoserver can automate the process of maintaining and indexing emails – and make it easy to locate them. Our company will set it up and you don’t ever have to think about it again.”

Educational institutions must adhere to the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) or face the consequences. A Connecticut community college was fined more than $700,000 for trashing emails that might have been relevant in a sexual harassment suit. A dependable email archiving software solution could have prevented the fine.

What if an industry is not specifically regulated by the government? Remember, any business can be sued and would need to produce any related documents such as emails. Even businesses that are sole proprietorships must follow the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure requiring the retention of relevant records that the opposing party’s lawyers have the right to examine. Asks Bingeman: “Could your company readily supply years’ worth of emails? If not, that could cause some trouble.”

Resembling a “black box” airplane information recorder, Cryoserver’s archiving software offers a complete, secure, tamper-evident repository for all emails and instant messages transmitted within a business. Organizations can purchase Cryoserver as an appliance or a software program – and it meets legal obligations for the long-term storage of e-documents.

“Your organization doesn’t need to construct your own email storage system,” says Bingeman. “Cryoserver’s email archiving solutions can start working for you right away. And, you can get back to running your company.”
